NRERC was established in 1985, to carry out interdisciplinary research in the area of natural resource and environmental resource management, pioneering this academic research framework in Israel.
NRERC has conducted theoretical, applied and policy studies in the areas of: Environmental resource management (water and air quality, solid waste, noise pollution, preservation of natural areas and open

spaces), and Natural resource management (depletable and renewable resource: water, energy, non-fuel minerals).
Research results have been published as research reports, working papers, conference proceedings, and scientific journal papers. NRERC organizes workshops and symposia on issues of interest to the scientific community, decision-making bodies and to the general public.

NRERC operates under the auspices of the Research Authority of the University of Haifa, as is the case with all other research centers and institutes at the University. These centers and institutes are not teaching units, and engage only in scientific research. Most of their funding comes from external sources, either domestically or internationally. The scientific research staff is typically composed of university faculty (who hold regular appointments in their respective academic departments), research fellows who do not hold regular academic positions (including short-term visiting fellows), and graduate students.
