Dr. Ziv Zemah-Shamir is the Long-Term Ecological Research Manager at the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station, part of the Marine Biology Department at the Leon H. Charney School of Marine Sciences, University of Haifa, Israel.

Dr. Zemah-Shamir’s academic journey spans a B.Sc. in Biology and a teaching certificate for science education from the University of Haifa (1996-2000), an M.A. in Natural Resources and Environmental Management from the same institution (2000-2002), and a Ph.D. in Marine Biology (2017-2020). His doctoral research focused on “The Human-Wildlife Conflict as a Global Challenge: Anthropogenic Factors Affecting Shark Behavior and Physiology,” using the winter aggregation of sharks in Hadera as a case study. He continued his post-doctoral studies (2021-2023) at the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station under the mentorship of Prof. Dan Tchernov.

Before his academic career, Dr. Zemah-Shamir served as a diver and field commander officer in the Israeli Navy. Between military deployments, he taught life sciences and marine sciences at Mevo’ot Yam High School, mentoring students on final thesis projects related to biotopes and ecotypes.

Since joining the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station in 2016, Dr. Zemah-Shamir has been instrumental in research focused on marine ecology, shark behavior, and conservation. His contributions include managing acoustic receiver arrays and conducting groundbreaking studies on shark aggregation, diel movement, and the microbiota of sharks.

Dr. Zemah-Shamir has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, highlighting topics such as marine conservation strategies, anthropogenic impacts on marine life, and the economic implications of shark tourism. His work has appeared in journals including the Journal of Environmental ManagementFishesFrontiers in Marine Science, and Aquaculture.

As of March 2023, he oversees long-term ecological research at the Morris Kahn Marine Research Station, continuing his commitment to advancing marine science and addressing global conservation challenges.
